National Instruments Hexapod

National Instruments Project

Kapek Design worked with test and measurement giant National Instruments to develop a showstopping demonstration unit to wow customers at tradeshows.

We conceived a six-legged hexapod robot, built using NI hardware and software.

We designed and built the frame using a specialist UK manufacturer, and used in-house 3D printers and a laser cutters to build the rest of the chassis.

We then integrated our own electronics to support the NI hardware with Wi-Fi connectivity and motion sensing.

Robustness and maintainability were key requirements. We designed a chassis that was easy to take apart, and padded the unit with custom 3D printed brackets. This meant that most of the parts could be reprinted in the event of a breakage.

We were able to deliver the product a month ahead of schedule, and significantly under budget. We also developed a full maintenance guide for the client.

National Instruments have since demonstrated the Hexapod at numerous tradeshows worldwide and it continues to generate great feedback from their customers.

Kapek’s work on the NI Hexapod was impeccable. The Hexapod aesthetics are immaculate from the fascia, to the electronics housing, to the hidden LED array – every design element was thoughtful and smart! I regularly demonstrate the Hexapod at engineering conferences throughout Europe - it never fails to impress.
